I recently registered a deleted domain name, FunkyDogGifts.com.  I don’t see any particular value in this name, but sometimes I’m influenced by my furry sidekick who thinks that anything with ‘dog’ in the name is a keeper.

Once I had the domain, I did a google search wondering if there was anything connected to it. I know this is something that should be done BEFORE buying a domain name, but, hey, I was under the puppy influence, remember?

I found a CafePress shop that sold cute little dog shirts with a Funky Dog Gifts logo on it that my puppy would absolutely destroy. And if I ever made her wear one, she’d disown me. Hell, I’d disown myself.

After some more searching I finally found a way to contact the people who owned it. They responded: yes, we own the cafepress shop and also own the domain name funkydoggifts.com.

Wait a minute. Didn’t I just register that domain name?

Turns out I had just found someone who had forgotten to renew the domain name to their ‘project’.

I wasn’t sure how to proceed at this point and started asking myself, what do I do? Can I hold the domain name hostage and charge a premium fee for returning it to them? Is this legal? Do they have a trademark? Can they repossess it without me receiving any compensation?

But the one question that stood out was, am I really capable of capitalizing on someone else’s oversight/mistake?

My dog says no, I’m not.

I wrote them and said: look, I picked up your domain when it was deleted, if you want it back, it’s yours for the registration fee that I paid.

I felt a weight lift off my shoulders, knowing that I had made a good decision. I wasn’t going to make any money, but it always makes me feel better to do something that feels ‘right’ and help someone out.

Now I’m left wondering, could I still do business in the domaining world if I don’t have the cutthroat (for lack of a better word) mindset it seems to take? Well, I don’t think so. Not that type of domaining anyways.

This helped me focus on what my goals are here and what I want to with domains. I want to build things, create things, and pick up as many cool names along the way as I can. I know there are only a limited number of names out there, so as long as I keep finding domain names that I think are worth something (or could be) then I’ll keep picking them up. And if I sell a few along the way? Well, that will be just fine.

Just so you know, it turns out that the couple that started the FunkyDogGifts cafepress store didn’t really want the domain. They told me thanks, but they didn’t really care. Apparently the plans they had never really got off the ground… Did I stress for nothing? No, I learned a great deal.

And my dog still loves FunkyPetGifts.com. I’ll have to build something great for her there, as long as it’s not trademarked…

I’m moving a site written in php4 over to a new server, and unfortunately the code contains thousands of “<%” and “%>” inside hundreds of php files. This syntax has been deprecated and all php tags are supposed to be “<?php” and “?>”.

There’s no way I’m doing this manually. Trying out Advanced Find and Replace for Windows right now.

Update for ya, it worked beautifully. I gzipped the site back up,  uploaded it to the server, unzipped it, and it worked beautifully…

(using php4, centos, apache)

It’s kind of a pain to edit files through a terminal such as puTTY, so using a combination of puTTY and winSCP, here’s how to edit the php.ini file to change Registered Globals to ON (or to Off, whatever).

First, locate your php.ini file

# locate php.ini

Change to that directory and modify the permissions on php.ini

# chmod o+w php.ini

Then open the file using winSCP, find the line that says Registered_Globals = Off, and change the Off to On.  Save the file..you may get an error, but it will still save.

Change the permissions on php.ini back to their original state:

# chmod o-w php.ini

Note that the change won’t take place until you restart your server.

Estibot is back up, yay. I’ll be running a few of the domains I like from yesterday through and I’ll update those posts.

I’ve officially entered the land race for four letter .net domain names with my recent acquisition of bdyc.net and ppko.net. At least when they’re all gone I can claim that I own a whopping 0.000437659746% of all the four letter .net domains. Which, yes, is two.

Estibot has been down…again.  He’s been having a bit of trouble over there lately. I wouldn’t mind except I’ve got a $4.95/month membership that I want to use on these last couple o’ lists I put together from AllDrops.com.

In related news, I would like to announce that I have two(2) four-letter .net domains for sale: bdyc.net and ppko.net :) Any offer will be opened, read, pondered, and replied to.

Time to head out before I decide to take part in the three character .org landrush. We’re not quite there yet…
